Snapchat's Approach to Maintaining Community Safety During the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games

July 23, 2024

This summer promises to be filled with energy, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments as we celebrate the spirit of sports and unity. Snapchat is transforming the way fans experience, celebrate, and watch sports — bringing them closer to the Games, their teams, and their favorite athletes and players.

At Snap, our mission is to offer a safe and fun environment where Snapchatters are free to express themselves, stay in touch with their real friends, and have fun together through engaging content.

Today, we're sharing how we are committed to fostering a positive and safe environment for our community during the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics:

Privacy and Safety

  • Privacy and Safety by Design. From day one, we’ve built products that prioritize our community’s privacy, safety, and wellbeing. Snapchat is an alternative to traditional social media — a visual messaging app that helps enhance your relationship with your friends, family, and the world. That’s why Snapchat opens directly to the camera, not a content feed, and focuses on connecting people who are already friends in real life. Snapchat empowers you to express yourself and have fun with friends without the pressure to grow a following or compete for likes.

  • Our Community Guidelines. Our Community Guidelines support our mission by encouraging the broadest range of self-expression, while striving to make sure Snapchatters can use our services safely every day. These guidelines apply to all content and behavior on Snapchat — and to all Snapchatters.

  • Proactive content moderation. Across Snapchat, we limit the ability for unmoderated content to reach a large audience and make sure that it complies with our Community Guidelines and Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility before it’s widely distributed. We use a combination of automated tools and human review to moderate our public content surfaces (such as Spotlight, Public Stories, and Maps) – including machine learning tools and dedicated teams of real people — to review potentially inappropriate content in public posts.

  • Our in-app reporting tool: Across all of our product surfaces, Snapchatters can report accounts and content for potential violations of our Community Guidelines. We make it easy for Snapchatters to submit a confidential report directly to our Trust & Safety team, who are trained to evaluate the report; take appropriate action according to our policies; and notify the reporting party of the outcome––typically within a matter of hours. For more information about reporting harmful content or behavior, visit this resource on our Support Site. You can also learn more about efforts to identify and take down harmful content, and promote wellness and safety on Snapchat, here.

  • Law enforcement cooperation: Snap is committed to assisting law enforcement while respecting the privacy and rights of Snapchatters. Once we have received a valid legal request for Snapchat account records, we respond in compliance with applicable law and privacy requirements. For more information you can visit our Privacy & Safety Hub.

  • Partnerships with industry experts and NGOs: We work with industry experts and non-governmental organizations to support Snapchatters in need and respond promptly to any reports of cyberharassment, hate speech, or other harmful situations prohibited on Snapchat. For additional resources, please visit our Here For You in-app portal or the additional resources below.

  • Athlete education and support: We have established direct channels to educate athletes about online safety and swiftly address any malicious behavior reported by athletes or on their behalf.

Additional external useful resources

In our ongoing efforts to promote safety, we encourage our community to make use of the following valuable resources in France:

  • THESEE: Reporting online scams and online complaints. Teleservice also open to foreign tourists.

  • 3018/E-Enfance: Dedicated to protecting minors online.

  • Ma Sécurité: Police and gendarmerie can help you with your enquiries.

  • PHAROS: To report illegal content.

  • Call 15: Emergency assistance in times of imminent danger.

We are committed to playing our part to ensure that Snapchat is a place where people can safely celebrate and participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For additional information on our safety approach, please visit our Privacy, Safety and Policy Hub.
